
Open APIs are increasingly important to digital media innovation, allowing the developer community to unlock new features and functionality. The winning apps demonstrate fresh approaches to content aggregation, social commerce, and mobility.

NYC Media Lab just announced the winners of Media Mash 2012, a competition for software developers to create mashups from more than 50 popular media and tech APIs. Over a four-month period, developers competed for a prize pool of $10,000 and came up with 18 creative apps.
Winners of the Best Overall Mashup and Student prizes were determined by a nine-person judging panel of noteworthy leaders in the media and technology industries. The Popular Choice Award winner was crowned by the public, who voted over a month-long period.
