1. Media Mash winners announced

Open APIs are increasingly important to digital media innovation, allowing the developer community to unlock new features and functionality. The winning apps demonstrate fresh approaches to content aggregation, social commerce, and mobility.

-Roger Neal, Executive Director of NYC Media Lab

NYC Media Lab just announced the winners of Media Mash 2012, a competition for software developers to create mashups from more than 50 popular media and tech APIs. Over a four-month period, developers competed for a prize pool of $10,000 and came up with 18 creative apps.

Winners of the Best Overall Mashup and Student prizes were determined by a nine-person judging panel of noteworthy leaders in the media and technology industries. The Popular Choice Award winner was crowned by the public, who voted over a month-long period.

    Best Overall Mashups

    • First Prize ($5,000) — InOur.name. This straightforward yet creative app asks two questions: “What issue is important to you?” and “What is your zip code?” The search results, pulled from the NewsCred API, show the legislative actions taken by a user’s elected representatives.
    • Second Prize ($2,000) — CityMaps. This application, which utilizes the FourSquare, OpenTable, and Fandango APIs, transforms a simple city map into a hub for social commerce. The app aggregates consumer tweets and merchant deals, and connects them to local commerce services, like OpenTable and Fandango.

    Popular Choice Award ($2,000)

    • New York MapperVoted best app by the public, New York Mapper allows Google Map explorers to discover and share places with their friends using a handy Facebook overlay.

    Student Award ($1,000)

    • InOur.name — Hats off to the creator, Jason Wright, a HackNY Fellow and graduate engineering student at Cornell.
