1. A Contribution of Historical Proportions

With a total pledge of $10,700, Nova Spivak’s challenge to develop unblockable, anonymous, encrypted mobile Internet access for widely-used devices is a novel means of crippling repressive regimes in Asia and the Middle East. And you can help motivate a solver with one click on the “Me Too” button, and one click on the Twitter or Facebook share buttons.

Spivak is the Founder and CEO of Radar Networks and Twine, a technology venture located in San Francisco. As a co-founder of one of the very first Internet companies in existence (EarthWeb), his reputation as a technology visionary is well-earned. His interest in solving this particular challenge falls squarely on the humanitarian elements derived from technological advancement. Nova describes this effort as a “contribution of historical proportions” and highlights the solution as “a technology that can literally reshape our world, liberate hundreds of millions of people from repression, and bring down evil regimes in the process.” He cites recent brutality in Tibet, Myanmar, and Iran as examples of repression resulting from the cutting off of freely flowing information through censorship, spying, and blocking. Spivak believes that enabling this flow of information will open the door for Democracy in Asian and Middle Eastern countries where citizens are currently denied important civil liberties.

Spivak is not alone in his concern for using technology to spread and protect Democracy. There are several solutions and suggestions (including one representative from a group of students at NASA working to achieve this very same goal). A successful solution could shift the control of information from the hands of the few to the hands of the many. Be sure to Join the challenge and Share it today.
