An active promoter of start-ups in air and space, Esther Dyson is hoping to entice a “far-thinking multi-billionaire” to initiate a Mars Habitation Corp. dedicated to making Mars livable for human beings. Dyson suggests that an initial investment would be approximately $20 billion, and that subsequent investment would best be achieved by selling shares to a constituency of supporters worldwide. These supporters could actually be purchasing future Martian citizenship.
Having recently spent five months in Russia training as a backup astronaut with the Russian Space Agency, Dyson is well-suited to challenge us to Terraform the next frontier. She has also posted a related challenge to genotype astronauts in order to collect essential data about a uniquely healthy group of people.
Dyson predicts this project will take decades and 10s of billions of dollars to complete. The result, however, may be not only additional living space on Mars, but an improvement to living and environmental conditions on Earth. To share the challenges, click here.
