Think back to your last sit-down meal. What did your plate look like? Was it mostly protein? Mostly carbs? Mostly pizza?
Chances are, your plate didn’t measure up to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Here’s the new MyPlate icon that summarizes the USDA’s advice:

The goal is to make sure that half your plate consists of fruits and vegetables. If you find that inspiring (or intimidating), you’ll want to follow the new MyPlate Fruits and Veggies Video Challenge, which launched today. The challenge invites the general public to create videos of tips and how-tos for eating more fruits and vegetables — without spending a lot of money.
Videos should be approximately 30 seconds long and fit into one of these categories: tips for kids, tips when eating at home, and tips when eating away from home. Tips should be easy and practical, and can be in any form: create an ode to okra! Sing a song of strawberries! (Just be sure to include the message “Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.”)
Prizes: $9,000 in cash
Submission period: Sept. 26–Nov. 15
Judging: Nov. 21–Dec. 12
Winners announced: Dec. 14
